Common Ground with Your Hairstylist

I’m assuming that we have all been there before with a coworker, a neighbor, a classmate- no matter how hard you try, there’s just not an organic chemisrty there. But ya gotta be civil because, ya know, we’re all adults and it’s easier without the drama. I promise that you’re not gonna want that kind of relationship with the person who is taking scissors to your hair. Which is why, establishing common ground with your hairstylist is crucial for achieving the best results and enjoying a positive salon experience. Building a rapport and understanding each other’s perspectives can lead to a more satisfying and consistent relationship. Here’s how to find and cultivate common ground with your hairstylist.

1. Communicate Your Hair Goals Clearly

Share Your Vision

  • Be straightforward! Clearly communicating your hair goals helps your stylist understand what you’re aiming for.

  • Tips:

    • Bring photos of hairstyles you like and explain why they appeal to you. Seriously- this is my go-to. I have been known to screen shot an Old Navy add!

    • Discuss your long-term hair goals, whether it's growing out your hair, maintaining a certain style, or experimenting with new looks.

Be Honest About Your Preferences

  • There’s no reason to tip toe around what you want- and it’s not a crime to be honest about it. Being upfront about your likes and dislikes ensures your stylist knows your preferences.

  • Tips:

    • Talk about past experiences, both positive and negative, to give your stylist context.

    • Be specific about what you don’t want to avoid misunderstandings.

2. Listen to Professional Advice

Value Their Expertise

  • You put in the work to find this person, the best match for you. And a clear idea of what you want is awesome. Just remember that your stylist has professional training and experience that can guide you to the best hair decisions.

  • Tips:

    • Ask for their opinion on styles that will suit your face shape, hair texture, and lifestyle.

    • Be open to their suggestions, even if they differ from your initial idea. They only want the best for you!

Discuss Feasibility

  • Occasionally I get a hairbrained idea (see what I did there?) that’s… just not suited for me. Some styles may not be achievable due to your hair’s condition or limitations.

  • Tips:

    • Have an open conversation about what’s realistically possible with your hair. Some styles just won’t work and that’s okay!

    • Ask about the steps and maintenance required for achieving your desired look. We want to be prepared, ya know?

3. Establish Trust and Respect

Build a Rapport

  • A friendly and respectful relationship with your stylist enhances communication and trust. My stylist and I have such an ease with one another, and it has been vital to the state of my hair! We want that for you too!

  • Tips:

    • Engage in small talk and show interest in their work and experiences. You’re spending one on one time with them, why not make it fun!

    • Treat your stylist with respect and appreciation for their skills.

Be Respectful of Their Time

  • I doubt there is a person out there who appreciates their precious time being wasted. Pay it forward by respecting your stylist’s time which shows you value their professionalism.

  • Tips:

    • Arrive on time for your appointments and notify them in advance if you need to cancel or reschedule.

    • Avoid last-minute changes to your requested services without prior discussion.

4. Align on Maintenance and Upkeep

Discuss Maintenance Requirements

  • It’s best to know what you are getting into with a hairstyle prior. Understanding the upkeep required for your chosen style ensures you can maintain it between visits.

  • Tips:

    • Ask about the products and techniques needed to maintain your hairstyle at home.

    • Discuss how often you’ll need to return for touch-ups or trims.

Set Realistic Expectations

  • Consider your lifestyle. Are you away for work often? Maybe in the throes of parenting young kids? Possibly on a tight budget? Aligning on what’s achievable within your lifestyle helps avoid disappointment.

  • Tips:

    • Be honest about the time and effort you can commit to your hair care routine.

    • Choose styles that fit your daily habits and capabilities.

5. Provide Constructive Feedback

Offer Feedback Positively

  • Constructive feedback helps your stylist understand your needs better. Seriously- it’s okay to need a little adjusting. Alerting your stylist about any issues and talking it through is helpful for you both.

  • Tips:

    • Express your thoughts on the final result politely and clearly.

    • Highlight what you liked and what you’d prefer to change for next time.

Encourage Dialogue

  • I am of the chatty sort, so it goes without saying but, if you aren’t or are in a new relationship with a stylist, lemme say this: A two-way conversation ensures both you and your stylist are satisfied with the results.

  • Tips:

    • Ask for their feedback on how your hair responded to the treatment or style.

    • Discuss any concerns or adjustments you’d like to make in future visits.

Finding common ground with your hairstylist is essential for a successful and enjoyable hair care experience. I simply cannot stress that enough. By communicating your goals clearly, valuing professional advice, establishing trust and respect, aligning on maintenance, and providing constructive feedback, you can build a strong and positive relationship with your stylist. To put it simply, this is gonna lead to rockin hair + the best salon experience!
